(2007-06-19) Unshared Wifi

It's frustrating, given my desire to see WiFi be available everywhere to compete with TelCo services, to see the vast majority of SSID-s being protected, and thus not Sharing [[WiFi]].

Why do people do this?

  • to protect their home machines from being hacked (MsWindows Security)

  • to avoid having their email and other traffic get sniffed

    • hmm does GMail and Yahoo Mail have SSL?

    • I see in Yahoo that my login goes through SSL, but not the pages after that. \

    • GMail gives you SSL if you start from an SSL URI.

    • many POP/IMAP provides support SSL to encrypt all traffic. (But you have to know how to set that up.)

  • to avoid being sued by the RIAA because some "pirated" content through your network (since your whole network generally shows up as a single IP due to NAT).

Bob Frankston notes that every WiFi hub should support multiple SSID-s. I don't think that would solve the RIAA issue, but it would cover the others.

How about the FON model?
