(2008-11-05) General Semantics Conference Rushkoff

There's a weekend free symposium on General Semantics in NYC Nov 14-15 (argh conflict with Mobile BarCamp).

There's a Friday night event, where you can pay for dinner, or just attend the Douglas Rushkoff lecture for free.

• some amazing people have given this lecture: Abraham Maslow, Bucky Fuller, Robert Anton Wilson
• us freeloaders are benefactors of the dues-payers, who chose to Share
• Credit Crisis 2008 comes from society following Game Rule-s that tell us that we can't share, can't create value: Artificial Scarcity
• kids start playing a Computer Game "straight", then get cheat codes, then win, then write mod for Sharing, then learn real coding to write new game
• society goes through same stages: levering New Media: writing, printing press, computer, Internet
• few take advantage of latest lever, even fewer share that
  • lots of bloggers, few coders
  • we don't think of the assumptions and Game Rule-s that we're accepting in that rule
    • starting from Renaissance (see his other recent stuff): Place become Property, Commerce became Corporation, Relation Ship/Reputation became Branding
• General Semantics has trickled down into NLP, Tony Robbins, The Secret
