(2008-12-08) Olpc Ebook

Wanting to try EBook on OLPC. See 2007-12-11-OlpcEbook

Steps

• there's a built-in "Read" app which seem to be just a PDF reader.

• FBReader

  • should I try this site?

  • I'm trying these install instructions.

    • that got most of the way through then gave me an error like "could not allocate memory"

    • but if I just type 'FBReader' (case-sensitive) in a terminal window, it comes up. The font size that comes up is pretty weird. But that's easy to adjust.

  • I wonder if the Plucker format of MicroGraphia includes images? (There's a list of other OLPC-friendly EBook-s, including a link to some EPub books. Though FBReader doesn't support CSS in EPub yet.)

    • downloaded it from that link with the Browse activity (which is based on Mozilla). No clear indication of where the download went, so can't find it in FBReader!

      • stuff should be under '/home/olpc/' supposedly, but it isn't

      • Journal shows the download, but can't seem to do anything from there. (Perhaps because FBReader isn't a Sugar UI activity?)

    • downloaded to my mac instead, copied to Flash Drive, copied from that to OLPC (look inside '/media' for Flash Drive).

      • yup, can now view the books (no MicroGraphia Plucker file doesn't seem to have images; EPub OriginOfSpecies does)
