(2010-07-09) Bookstore Future

Mike Shatzkin thinks Book Store-s will see a Bricks And Mortar decline from 72% of the market today to 25% in 5 years!

  • aside from what that means for book sellers he thinks this will also weaken the position of big Book Publishing players (vs new entrants, independent authors, etc.) since the key value publishers offer authors is the ability to stuff books onto shelves.

Google Editions will supposedly launch late this summer. Google is on the verge of completing a deal with the American Booksellers Association (ABA), the trade group for independent bookstores, to make Google Editions the primary source of EBook-s on the Web sites of hundreds of independent booksellers around the country. Joe Wikert imagines a Network of independent stores. Should A Libris or AbeBooks (argh now part of Amazon) be doing that?
