(2012-08-15) Mobile FirefoxOS

Last year Mozilla announced an experimental Boot To Gecko project with the aim of developing an Operating System that emphasizes standards-based Web technologies. The initial focus will be on delivering a software environment for handheld (Mobile) devices such as smartphones.

They have now renamed it FirefoxOS and have some dummy screenshots to show.

Like WebOS, it is intended to focus on HTML/JavaScript for app development.

Aug16: Nokia engineer Oleg Romashin has already gotten an experimental version of the software up and running on his Raspberry Pi.

Feb'2013: To date, 17 key operators spanning the globe have committed to the open web device initiative: América Móvil, China Unicom, Deutsche Telekom, Etisalat, Hutchison Three Group, KDDI, KT, Mega Fon, Qtel, Sing Tel, Smart, Sprint, Telecom Italia Group, Telefónica, Telenor, TMN and Vimpel Com... Mozilla is working with manufacturers Alcatel (TCL), LG and ZTE to build the first Firefox OS devices, with Huawei to follow later in the year, all powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon™ mobile processors.

Feb'2013: FirefoxOS won't be coming to the U.S. until 2014, and chances are that its rather budget approach is not for you, dear gadget-obsessed Gizmodo reader.

Apr'2013: Mozilla is really doing a "Pivot to Mobile".

Jun'2013: Foxconn is developing more than five devices running the FirefoxOS for its customers... and plans to hire up to 3,000 people in Taiwan with expertise in HTML5 and cloud computing.
