The main concerns many people have with Direct Democracy are:
logistics of scaling decision making (this seems less of an issue with widescale accessibility of the Inter Net)
whether issues are "too complex" for the [Common Man] to comprehend, and whether he can be trusted to consider the [Greater Good].
There's an interesting description of a Direct Democracy in L Neil Smith's [Probability Broach] alternate-Earth. Each person has voting power, but can delegate it moment by moment, issue by issue, to anyone else.
