(2003-11-08) Moderate Exercise

People say we need Moderate Exercise for Physical Fitness. But how much is moderate?

  • Sandy Szwarc says The recommendation of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), CDC, and NIH of just 30 minutes a day of moderate exercise, such as brisk Walking, on most days can do the trick. Uh, are any of these people NYC residents with kids?

  • Kenneth Cooper's group [says](http://www.cooperaerobics.com/tips/Target Heart Rate.aspx) Your best fitness results can be realized when you exercise regularly within your personal target heart rate - at least 20 minutes four times a week, or 30 minutes three times per week.

    • they also [note](http://www.cooperaerobics.com/tips/Fat But Fit.aspx) For example, excessive weight in your stomach is dangerous compared to fat that is primarily in the extremities. The waist-to-hip ratio is an important predictor of disease. The ratio should be under 0.85 for a man and 0.75 for a woman. Any ratio above 1.0, that is, the circumference of your waist is greater than the circumference of your hips, is very often associated with disease. The distribution of the body weight is very important.
  • contrarily, the Super Slow program recommends just 1 session/week after the first 3 weeks!
