(2011-01-04) Rss Dead Open Web Silo City

Another round of "RSS is dead" discussion, esp around traffic leads for Tech Crunch.

Dave Winer broadens his counter-attack, defining the OpenWeb as meaning not in a corporate blogging silo: excluding not just Mobile apps but Walled Garden-s like FaceBook and Twitter and Quora.

  • Stowe Boyd has an interesting counter: I maintain that Twitter, Facebook, and other ‘closed’ systems are really something else: they are dense and complex social systems, more like modern cities (Urban) than Web 1.0 publishing platforms. And, like cities, there is more going on, less being controlled by specifications like RSS, and the food is better, the music is better, and there is more dangerous sex taking place. I Commented that "I think FaceBook is more like Las Vegas than NYC". I think those closed systems are more like a Company Town. But have to chew it over more.
