(2018-11-27) Benson Game Theory Mindfulness And Critical Thinking
Buster Benson: Game theory, mindfulness, and critical thinking. I keep a list of every book I read and every passage that strikes me as worth revisiting (Highlight)
I’m always trying to find new connections between the things that keep drawing my attention and interest. It’s what led me to the cognitive bias cheat sheet and is continuing to fuel my progress on this book.
The most rewarding moments of this whole process are when new connections appear between different threads that in hindsight seem obvious. (associative)
how similar the disciplines of product management and conflict resolution and the scientific method all are to one another (they are social rituals that are designed to process new information on multiple levels at once: why, what, and how).
Another rewarding moment is when you find that multiple fields of research are merging together but also have a lot of gaps that were solved or at least addressed in only one of the fields. That’s how the intersection of game theory, mindfulness, and critical thinking feel to me right now
The thread that ties them all together, for me, is communication. The game theory of communication, mindfulness of communication, and critical thinking within communication.
One example: creating an internal mental space (mindfulness) that encourages simulations of diverse ideas (game theory) in service of increased insight (critical thinking) is a clue to working with biases, practicing the art of fruitful disagreement, and feeling more able to participate in the world without going crazy.
