My Server Hosting Experience

Variety of Hosted Server flavors I've experienced (newest at top)

Family Financial Future: Linode

AEP: Engine Yard

MoinMoin for my WikiLog: Blue Host

DailyLit: Managed Hosting: RackSpace

Living Independently: Managed Hosting (RackSpace, then I Net U)

Axiom Legal: we ran our own servers in-house (Win2k) - low load, mostly intranet, so not as bad to deal with, though spent a lot up-front for nice isolated server room.

Zope hosting for Team Flux/WikiLogs and my own WikiLog: IMeme

MedScape

  • first ran Mac[[OS]] servers in-house

  • then Win N T servers in-house - in closed off room, with floor-standing Air Conditioning unit

    • big problems maintaining consistent temperature (and computers hate changing temperature even if its not to extreme levels)

    • Broad Band management was a pain in the butt (though more people know how to handle BGP these days)

  • then CoLo in Exodus (in Jersey City) which was a pain if you had to deal with OS failures (thanks Win N T) or hardware failures (e.g. Load Balancing box)
