Books I'm pretending to read simultaneously:
various Daily Lit titles, esp [Best Of Technology Writing2007]
[Daniel Nissanoff]: [Future Shop]: How to Trade Up to a Luxury Lifestyle Today ISBN:014311221X (importance of AuctIon markets)
[David Rothkopf]: [Super Class]: The Global Power Elite and the World They Are Making ISBN:0374272107
[Mary Kurcinka]: [Raising Your] [Spirited Child] ISBN:0060923288
John Thackara: [In The Bubble] ISBN:0262701154
[Brett Mc Laughline] [Head First] [OOAD] ISBN:0596008678 boy I wish there were a book focusing on this for WebApp development.
[David Heinemeier Hannson] and Dave Thomas: [Agile Web Development With Rails] ISBN:097669400X
Tom Kelley (IDEO): The Art of Innovat Ion ISBN:0-385-49984-1
[Thierry Bardini]: Boot Strapping ISBN:0804737231 about Douglas Engelbart
[John Micklethwait] and [Adrian Wooldridge]: The Company : A Short History of a Revolutionary Idea ISBN:0679642498
Vernor Vinge: The Collected Stories of Vernor Vinge ISBN:0312875843
(various): [Visualizing Argumentation] (see Argumentation Visualization)
Michael Chabon: Mc Sweeney's Mammoth Treasury of Thrilling Tales ISBN:140003339X
Robert Horn: [Mapping Hypertext] ISBN:0962556505
Books I've finished:
[Richard K Morgan]: [Broken Angels] ISBN:0345457714 and [Woken Furies] ISBN:0-575-07652-6 of Takeshi Kovacs series
Russell Ackoff, [Daniel Greenburg]: Turning Learning Right Side Up ISBN:9780132346498
Cory Doctorow: Little Brother ISBN:0765319853 awesome
[Richard K Morgan]: Altered Carbon ISBN:9780345457691 excellent now I have to read his other stuff, esp other Takeshi Kovacs
[P J O Rourke]: On The [Wealth Of Nations]: Books That Changed the World ISBN:0802143423 - Very disappointing. Like a marginally humourous [Cliffs Notes] of Adam Smith. Notes critiques of Free Market, but things that quoting Smith if refutation/proof, rather than trying to explain things at a meaningful/complex level. Pointless. Though does have interesting bit about emergence of burgher/free-trader group in Europe.
Anders (ed.): [Years Best Sf12] (Short Story) ISBN:0061252085 (include Rudy Rucker "Chu" story mentioned at z2005-09-20- Stross Accelerando Resimulated)
Charlie Stross: Toast (Short Story collection) ISBN:0809556030 - lots of fun, themes that came up in [Halting State], etc. (including another source of "Lobsters").
David Brin, Rudy Rucker, others: [Live Without A Net] ISBN:0451459458
[Kyle Macdonald]: [One Red Paperclip] ISBN:0307353168 - The ultimate BarTer story (not scalable, it was mainly Spec Tacle), with guest appearances by [Alice Cooper] and [Corbin Bernsen]
John Holt: [Teach Your Own] ISBN:0738206946
[Bill Moggridge]: [Designing Interactions] ISBN:0262134743 Didn't love it. It smells (and is bound like) an Interaction Design Text Book destined to be foisted on [DSchool] students to prepare their IDEO indoctrination. It's often enjoyable to read interviews with people who've accomplished things, but it's hard to learn anything Action Able from them. Has DVD and website.
[ReWired] (Post-Cyber Punk Anthology) ISBN:1892391538 excellent, includes some Charlie Stross and Cory Doctorow I'd already read. The commentary bits I found rather useless.
Charlie Stross: [Atrocity Archives] ISBN:0441013651
[Earl Mac Rauch]: Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the Eighth Dimension ISBN:0743442482
Charlie Stross: [Halting State] ISBN:0441014984
John Holt: [Instead Of Education] ISBN:1591810094
Mitchel Resnick: Turtles, Termites and Traffic Jams ISBN:0262680939 grr no index
Charlie Stross: [Glass House] ISBN:0441015085 oooh yummy brainsalad
[Robert Ferrigno]: [Prayers For The Assassin] ISBN:0-743-27289-7 rather cheesy
William Gibson: [Spook Country] ISBN:9780399154300 excellent, though some of the repetitive phrasing is irritating.
Charlie Stross: The Family Trade ISBN:0765348217 a little too lite, like cheesy fantasy - I kept expecting a unicorn to appear. And frustrating lack of closure, unless of course you read the rest of the series.
Seth Godin: [TheDip] ISBN:1591841666 (Godin Dip)
[Erik Larson]: Devil In The White City ISBN:0375725601
SamRuby and Leonard Richardson: Restful Web Services ISBN:0596529260 awesome
[Jessica Livingston]: Founders At Work ISBN:1590597141 awesome
[Stuart Skorman]: Confessions of a Serial Entrepren Eur ISBN:0787987328 lite but pointless
Vernor Vinge: Rainbows End ISBN:0312856849 excellent
Douglas Coupland: [JPod] ISBN:0671874349 kinda creepy characters
Phillip J Eby: [You Version2] http://dirtsimple.org/products/index.html
Charlie Stross: [Iron Sunrise] ISBN:0441012965 sequel to Singular Ity Sky
[Michael Gerber]: EMyth Revisited ISBN:0887307280 (done, but want to blog it more)
John Ratey: Shadow Syndromes ISBN:0553379593 (re-reading; ADD, depression, anxiety, etc.)

[Steve Farber]: Radical Leap ISBN:0793185688
Samuel Shem: [Mount Misery] ISBN:0449911187 - sequel to [House Of God]
Rudy Rucker: [Flex And The Elixir] ISBN:0765310597 lotsa fun, I have to be more tolerant of my clumsy Number Two Son.
Chad Fowler: [My Job Went To India] ISBN:0976694018
Jim Mc Carthy: Software For Your Head (Sept'2005) ISBN:0201604566
Cory Doctorow: Someone Comes To Town... ISBN:0765312786 - very bizarre combination of WiFi/Cell Phone debates with surreal fantasy that would make Jorge Luis Borges proud.
Charlie Stross: Acceler Ando ISBN:0441012841 - Excellent. I rather prefer the pre-Singular Ity bits
[Christopher Phillips]: [Socrates Cafe] ISBN:0393049566 see z2004-04-08- Phillips Socrates Cafe (Aug'2005)
John Markoff: [What The Dormouse Said] ISBN:0670033820 see z2005-05-02- Markoff Dormouse
Jim Loehr: The Power of Full Engage Ment ISBN:0743226755 (JiHi heard him speak at work)
IFTF: Health and Health Care 2010 ISBN:078795974X
Douglas Coupland: Micro Serfs ISBN:0060987049 (re-read)
Cory Doctorow: Eastern Standard Tribe (re-read, actually bought paperback)
[Mark Hyman], [Mark Liponis]: Ultra Prevention ISBN:0743448839 (didn't finish, but put it aside - unless you spend big bucks on tests and (their) interpretation of the results, you end up with an infinite number of suggested lifestyle changes. They're upfront about saying you don't have to do all of them, but (a) without the tests you're prioritizing in the dark, and (b) the overall impression is hopeless-guilt-inducing...
[Adam Zickerman]: [Power Of10] (Super Slow)
Mark Pilgrim: [Dive Into Python] ISBN:1590593561 - excellent at covering the basics, and letting you know about some nice functions in the standard library. But a lot of the more indirect functions (lambda, etc.) seem annoyingly obtuse, and my current attitude is that they should probably be avoided unless you really need them, like if you're building some abstract framework...
[Michael N Kennedy]: Product Development for the Lean Enterprise ISBN:1892538091 - skimmed it, not really in the mood for BigCo Innovat Ion models. [ProdDev] as different from Lean Manufacturing.
Neal Stephenson: The [System Of The World] (Baroque Cycle) - the trilogy seemed to move faster as it went along. Enjoyed all bits quite a lot.
[Iain Banks]: [The Business] ISBN:0754023060 - disappointing. Nothing seems to be happening, then everything gets wrapped up too fast in a weird way.
[Max Barry]: Jennifer Government ISBN:1400030927 - rather enjoyable anti-Anarch Ist screed. Seemingly anti-Anarcho Capitalist, but really anti-[Corporat Ist].
Scott Westerfeld: [So Yesterday] ISBN:159514000X - lots of fun, semi-guilty pleasure; sneaky making the father of a Cool Hunter to be an [Epidemiolog Ist]; "older" woman sounds like Dee Dee Gordon
Clayton Christensen: The Innovators Solution ISBN:1578518520
Ernesto Sirolli: [Ripples From The Zambezi] ISBN:0865713979
Peter Lamborn Wilson: Pirate Utopias ISBN:1570270244 (Jul2004)
Neal Stephenson: The [Confus Ion] ISBN:0060523867 (The Baroque Cycle)
Tom Peters: [Re Imagine] ISBN:078949647X
Kurt Andersen: [Turn Of The Century] Mar2004 ISBN:0385335040 - very enjoyable; I found the bits on NYC life to be most engaging
Don Tapscott: [Digital Capital] ISBN:1578511933
David Schmaltz: [Blind Men] ISBN:1-57675-253-4
James Howard Kunstler: [Home From Nowhere] ISBN:0684837374 - good ranting about the emptiness of suburbia/Edge City
Ray Oldenburg (editor): Celebrating the Third Place ISBN:1569246122 not recommended
Erik Benson: [Man Versus Himself] ISBN:0595283535
Peter Small: [Web Presence] at http://www.stigmergicsystems.com/wp/
[Anthony Bourdain]: [Kitchen Confidential] ISBN:0060934913 z2003-08-29- Kitchen Confidential - Made me want to run up to [Les Halles] for lunch. More of a collection of essays than a coherent book, but still a good inside look at the [Restaurant Industry]. (Related recommendation: Peter Greenaway flick "The Cook The Thief...")
Spalding Gray: [Morning Noon And Night] ISBN:0374527210 - if your woman is pissed have her read this - she'll appreciate you a lot more...
William Gibson: [Pattern Recognition] ISBN:0399149864
[Warren Ellis]: [Trans Metropolitan] (compiled first year) (plus some back issues of [Global Frequency])
Peter Small: [Ultimate Game Of Strategy] ISBN:027364999X
Gary Wolf: [Wired A Romance] ISBN:0375502904 - rather thin, doesn't evoke any intense feelings unless the reader unleashes his own longing.
[Roger L Simon]: The [Lost Coast] - ok [Moses Wine] novel, not greatest
[Helen De Witt]: The Last Samurai ISBN:0786887001 hysterical
Roger Schank: Coloring Outside The Lines ISBN:0060930772 about Educating Kids
[Zeit Geist] by Bruce Sterling ISBN:0553576410
Ishmael by Daniel Quinn ISBN:0553375407 (Apr'03): really annoying
Peter Small: [Entrepreneurial Web] (Feb'03) ISBN:027365036X
Cory Doctorow: Down And Out In The Magic Kingdom : an excellent page-turner (actually, scroll-button-presser, since I read it on my Pilot). Need to eventually blog some detailed thoughts about its scenario. (Jan'03) ISBN:0765304368
Mike Wallace: [New Deal For New York] ISBN:0972315519
Daniel Quinn: [Beyond Civilization] (Nov'02) ISBN:0609805363
[Patricia Volk]: Stuffed: Not bad, but rather weak, other family/food books ([Ruth Reichl]) are probably better. ISBN:0375411062
Robert Heinlein: [Stranger In A Strange Land] ISBN:0441790348, [Revolt In2100] ISBN:0671577808
Arnold Kling: [Under The Radar] (Sept'02) - site ISBN:0738207748
Hacker Ethic by [Pekka Himanen] (Aug'02): mediocre, just read my summary ISBN:037575878X
Steven Johnson: Emerg Ence - good, reminiscent of James Gleick's Chaos, but not quite that good. Maybe better if you haven't been exposed to the gestalt before... ISBN:0684868768
Brain Storm by [Richard Dooling] (Apr'02): entertaining, but not great. I'll probably sell mine.
Jerry Weinberg: More Secrets Of Consulting (Mar'02): excellent ISBN:0932633528
[CobWeb] by Neal Stephenson (again) (Feb'02): great
Christopher Hitchens: [Letters To A Young Contrarian] (Jan'02): has some good bits, but a bit thin. Borrow it. ISBN:0465030327
Bobos In Paradise (Dec'01): some good sections, but weak conclusions. ISBN:0684853787
Harry Potter (Dec'01): thought it was thin on story and character. The later volumes are supposedly better.
Prime Directive (trekkie book) (Nov'01)
[Underground History Of American Education] by John Taylor Gatto (Nov'01): a bit bizarre (heavy conspiracy theory), but definitely a voice that needs hearing ISBN:0945700040
Utopian Entrepreneur by Brenda Laurel (Oct'01): pretty good, but frustrating (half-stories, not even juicy details) ISBN:0262621533
[Balsamic Dreams] by [Joe Queenan] (Oct'01): bits of entertainment, but feels just like a series of (repetitive) columns, not a real book.
WikiWay by [BoLeuf] and Ward Cunningham ISBN:020171499X
